Trump and Japan's New Prime Minister Share Praise and Commit to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Bond
During a latest visit to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Trump together with the Japanese new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and vowed to strengthen the already strong two-way ties.
Highlights from the Meeting
Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and congratulated her on assuming the role of the nation's inaugural female premier. In their discussions at Tokyo's official venue, Trump expressed confidence that Takaichi would become one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of Japan.
The prime minister, identified as a protégée of former Prime Minister Abe, praised Trump's efforts to address global conflicts and reportedly vowed to put forward him for the prestigious award.
Trade and Security Deals
The two governments revealed a series of collaborative projects in areas such as energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Japan-based firms are exploring investments of up to $400bn in the US.
Furthermore, Japan had earlier committed $550 billion in long-term US investments, loans, and assurances as part of an arrangement to secure exemption from the former president's import duties.
These actions are seen as possibly reducing any future requests from the US side for Japan to boost its defense expenditure. The prime minister addressed this by promising to fast-track plans to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP.
