The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast
This first look reveals Matt Damon in the role of the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope. In a poignant moment, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise his safe homecoming, only for him to look up and question what happens if he cannot. Furthermore, the preview provides a brief, shadowy glimpse at Polyphemus the Cyclops, from whom sheep are are taken by the hero and his men on their treacherous voyage.
Adapted from a cornerstone in classic storytelling, The Odyssey follows the epic journey undertaken by the famed ruler. After his triumph in the Trojan War, which is depicted within the companion epic, Odysseus endures an extended and hazardous road home.
Mythical Encounters and a Star-Studded Lineup
Along his path, the hero encounters countless challenges and mythical beings. This roster features the enchantress Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Despite these trials, Odysseus vows to overcome anything to get back to his wife and son on his home island.
The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
Homer's epic has seen many reinterpretations throughout history. Examples include contemporary versions and a late-90s dance production. It has even been adapted into a musical titled Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a multi-part album series.
The official trailer was long awaited following the project's reveal and a brief teaser which was initially shown only on the big screen. That teaser later made its way onto the internet soon after.
