Can I Get a Witness? Review Review – Sandra Oh Headlines the Cast in Futuristic Story of Planned Death
The Director's dystopian fable begins, not with gnarly destruction, but birdsong and dense vegetation. A serene atmosphere of whispering leaves and delicate blooms envelop the frame, while a classic tune plays softly in the background. That melodic motif pops up during the film, with every instance more menacing than the last. Truly, a sinister presence is lurking within this paradisiacal setting.
Ellie's Character
The story begins innocently enough. We see The mother Ellie, a radiant single mother, leaving her daughter Kiah to the care of Joel Oulette's role as the couple of youths head off on an critical task. Soon we learn that the pastoral beauty of their surroundings comes with a price. After planet-wide calamities, the humanity has decided to become unplugged. Moreover, a way to reduce people is implemented where people are willingly ended after turning 50. These individuals, it turns out, are Witnesses, official attendants who supervise these death protocols.
Engaging Contrast
An interesting duality emerges between the experienced Daniel and innocent Kiah, who records the activities in her illustrations; this habit is echoed in the film’s cinematic look, which incorporates animated segments into real-world footage. Opposed to these artistic elements, the storyline feels restrained, avoiding deep exploration into the ethical implications behind the idea of personal surrender for the broader benefit. Even when Kiah faces the tough choice of her mother’s approaching end, such complex issues are tenderly addressed. Unfortunately, considering the excellent performances and sparkling rapport between Oh and Jang. But in prioritising setting specifics and informative conversations over personal growth, the film swerves towards a finale that feels rushed.
